During the war his military unit was surrounded by the Germans and the soldiers caught in captivity. Tartakovsky managed to escape and his long hiding Ukrainian family, to which he became after the war, marrying the daughter of his rescuers. Jewish themes bothered artists of many nationalities. This is nice for an outstanding Russian artist Oleg Ivanov, I. Repin, N. Ge and others also gave tribute to Jewish themes, which then seemed biblical.
