Life of the Jewish settlements, towns of "Pale", before the beginning of the twenties of the last century is reflected in the books of Sholom Aleichem and other authors who wrote in Yiddish. But the real end of the world for such settlements in Eastern Europe came later, in the early forties, when the souls of the inhabitants flew out of the chimneys in Polish, Ukrainian, Belarusian sky. And what happened to these "missing" two decades? How extinguished lamp, lit two centuries ago on the grave of an old Hasidic righteous? "Precipitated" the biography of the boroughs years and tight gaping black hole openned pogroms between the Civil War and the Nazi extermination camps.
Roman Preigerson (1900-1969) "When the lamp goes out," largely fills this gap. The story flows slowly - just as the life of the village on the banks of a quiet river Psyol. More striking effect achieved by the author. Like takeoff philosophical generalizations and depth of penetration into the historical significance of the events would envy created any traditional "big novel."
